Dear Parents and Carers,

TERM 6 PROGRAMME OF STUDY

Welcome back after a lovely holiday! This term’s curriculum focus continues to be The Environment! We will be containing to explore the continent Europe. In particular, we shall be having a focus on Carnivals and Festivals across Europe! We will be doing an artist study and having our very own carnival at the end of the Summer Term. Our Year 5 Home Learning project will directly reflect this theme too.

Maths

We will be continuing to follow the new National Curriculum for Mathematics which will cover number and place value, partitioning and calculating, understanding shape, space, measures and handling data.

Please practise multiplication tables (up to 12 x 12) with your child regularly for faster recall.

English

In English we will be exploring many different text types including a range of Narrative, Fiction and Poetry. With each of these different text types the children will have the opportunity to read and explore different examples of the genre and to practise writing using key features of the text.

As always there will be a big focus on Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. Please encourage your child to practise spelling words and check and correct their spelling when completing Home projects. Please check your child’s home-school diary for the weekly breakdown of our spelling words for this term.

Active Reading

In our active Reading sessions, children will continue to read, discuss and practise their weekly reading skill. Please continue to check their home school diaries each week and support your child with developing their reading skills. Please read with your child read and/or discuss what they have read for at least 15 minutes a day. This could be children’s newspapers, bedtime stories, cookbook recipes etc. Any reading you do with your child, please note down in their home-school diary.

Science

In Science we will be learning about ‘Materials’. This will involve practical investigations and developing problem solving skills.

P.E.

PE will be every Tuesday. PE Kits must be brought to school on Monday morning and will be returned on Friday. Please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit which is a white t-shirt with navy blue or black shorts or jogging/tracksuit bottoms. Plimsolls or trainers should be worn. All items must be clearly labelled with your child’s name and should be brought to school in a named Granton PE bag.

Our Home Learning will be attached to the back pages of your child’s Home School Diary. Summer Term 6 will be given out after half term. Home learning in Year 5 will be shared and celebrated on Wednesdays where the due date has been specified.
