Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back after the holidays. We hope you are looking forward to the Summer term as much as we are! The theme for Terms 5 and 6 is the environment. We will be focussing on Carnivals and festivals culminating on in a whole school carnival. We will also be participating in a whole school STOMP production and den building activities. The children will be learning about Antarctica this term and comparing it to other continents.

In English we will be exploring lots of non-fiction information texts about Antarctica, which we will use to create our own fact files. We will also be exploring fantasy stories. We will be learning these stories using actions to help the children internalise the story in their memory bank. We will be examining the different features of good fantasy stories and will then borrow these ideas when we come to write our own fantasy story later in the term.

In Mathematics we will continue to add, subtract, multiply and divide. We will be extending our understanding further by solving worded problems. We will continue to practise comparing and solving practical problems with length, height, weight, capacity and time. We will also be revisiting fractions finding fractions of both shape and amounts.

In Science we will continue our learning about plants. We will be naming common garden and wild plants, including trees. We will be closely observing how plants grow both in class and at home. We will also continue our investigations with seasons, focusing on Summer! We will be learning about different animals and what they eat, grouping animals into; carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

PE will be twice a week. PE Kits must be brought to school on Monday morning and will be returned on Friday. Please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit which is a white

t-shirt with navy blue shorts. Plimsolls or trainers should be worn. All items must be clearly labelled with your child’s name and should be brought to school in a named Granton PE bag.

We will endeavour to read with your child twice a week in class. It is imperative you read with your child on a daily basis. This should include opportunities for your child to read to you and for your child to read with you. Please write comments relating to your child’s reading target in their home learning diaries which will be checked daily. Please email any computer-based home learning to Y1GPS@outlook.com .

Many Thanks for your continued support throughout this coming year,

Year 1 Team
