Dear Parents/ Carers,

Wow! It is hard to believe we have come to the last term of Nursery, what a wonderful year we have had. I am writing to inform you of the topics this term.

Topics: As part of our whole school Creative Curriculum we are looking at ‘The Environment’. In term 5 we looked at ‘growth and change’. We will be extending this theme into term 6 by exploring MINIBEASTS - caterpillars, worms, butterflies, bees, spiders etc! We will also be exploring and preparing your child for Reception through fun activities and experiences to support them with the transition process. To make the transition as easy and as smooth as possible, please continue to encourage your child’s independence at home.

Mathematics: We will continue to focus on counting, reading, ordering and writing numbers through fun activities. We will be sorting objects and beginning to represent numbers and findings from problem solving in ways that the children can begin to interpret. We will continue to focus on number recognition, shapes and how to solve number problems.

Phonics: Your child is approaching the end of Phase 1 phonics. In preparation for Phase 2 phonics, it is important that you help your child to listen to and identify initial sounds in words, e.g. mmmm for mum. We will be beginning to link sounds to letters and this will provide stimulus and challenge for our 1:1 reading sessions with your child. A fun game to play at home with your child is I-Spy!

Literacy: Please continue to give your child opportunities to ‘mark-make’. Please keep practising with your child to recognise and write their name, in preparation for Reception.

As always, we will endeavour to read with your child each week, change their book and write a comment in their home/school diary. It is important that you communicate your comments in the diary when you read with your child and any other information you might need to share with us.

Please come and see me at the end of the school day should you have any questions!

Thank you for your continued support.
